If you did not know, the World Coffee Champion 2021 just ended two weeks ago.
It is an annual event that gathers the best coffee professionals around the world to share a whole year of innovation that they have discovered; coffee, brewing technique or even sometimes coffee tools.
But there is a competition that anyone could stand an equal chance if you have a sensitive palate by nature, and that is the World Cup Tasters Championship.
The Cup Tasters Competition goes by going through several sets of triangular cupping, using the olfactory and sensory skill of the taster to pick the most number of odd one among the three cups.

Sounds easy? Not exactly, it is a competition that awards the Cupper that demonstrates speed, skill, and accuracy in distinguishing the taste differences in the coffees.
But there are ways to improve your palate.
One interesting way you could go to your favourite coffee shop and ask them for their recommendation but do not tell you what is the coffee until you have finished drinking your coffee.
If you have some leftover coffee that is insufficient for a dose for brewing that is sitting in your drawer, you can practice triangular cupping by setting them in the picture above but label the coffee underneath with tape.
Start by cupping against different origins, moving onto coffee of the same origin. Then, the same origin of similar regions of similar processing methods.
To take things further, try tasting it blind. Have another friend mix the triangular cupping around.
Have a go, and let us know if you are feeling inspired to sign up for the next National Cup Taster Competition?
